JANUARY 2008
Happy New Year!
Can you believe another year is in the books --- they say as you get older, time goes by faster and we would have to agree. We just celebrated our third Christmas out of the past four in Manila and the time has really flown by. We want to take this time to thank all of you for your prayers and financial support.
January is a good month to summarize what’s happened in the project since it started in 2003:
For 2008, the focus will be on growing and strengthening our existing churches. We do not plan on opening any new churches during the year but will add 5-10 new pre-schools to our existing churches.
August 2007
We moved this past August from a condominium in the city to a house near the hills, which is minutes near the kids' school. This has been great for the family! However, there are its pros and cons. The pros are: the kids don’t need to get up at 5:30 a.m. to get ready for school; the rent is a lot cheaper than the condo; and Cassie has a spacious yard to play in. The cons are: Pete’s commute is quite a bit longer; Tina's aunt lives further away from us; and shopping malls and good grocery stores are further away (Pete thinks this is good). To deal with the longer commute, Pete has become an avid listener of podcasts. Here is what he’s been listening to:
All of these men are passionate of their ministry, strive for excellence, and are culturally relevant. Hope you enjoy!

IMPACT
Pete flew out to Seattle for a few days in September to meet with the IMPACT Board of Directors. Some major changes have taken place. Tim Talbott resigned as President and Greg Laird is the new President. Added to the board were Chuck McGee, Bryant Sabandal, Marie Barsness, Matt Messner, and Doug Clark.

MUSIC TEAM
The Music Team, led by Tim Oas from Eastside Foursquare Church, came for an intense 7 days of music workshops, concerts, and visited some of our churches. They arrived past midnight and had a worship concert at Faith Academy (our kid's school) for the high school chapel that same morning. It was a blast and even though the team seemed a bit … or actually a lot jet lagged during warm ups, they came alive and nailed it when almost 300 students showed up. Pete was a little nervous since Faith Academy has a real mix of denominations and some fairly conservative people. When Tim announced, “Tatoos are COOL! But we're from Seattle!” the students loved it! We saw some teachers visibly cringe but never got any complaints.
We also had a chance for the team to have a workshop and concert for the youth of Victory Christian Fellowship in Pasig. The pastor is Doc Joey Castro. Pete met him when Pt. Jim Hayford spoke to the Manila pastors of Victory on one of his visits. Doc Joey focuses on the students at Rizal High School, which is in a very poor neighborhood. At one time, it was in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest high school in the world with over 25,000 students. Doc Joey’s burden for the poor led to a foundation called Life Scholarships which is established to provide scholarships all the way through college. Tim said he would love to come back and work with them again.

TASK FORCE RETREAT
The Task Force is comprised of the key leaders of the project --- the staff of the UCPP, the District Supervisors, the President of Foursquare Philippines, and a handful of other select leaders. At the Task Force Retreat, we completed the groundwork for an exciting re-organization that will better serve this growing project. The Task Force members were highly engaged in each discussion that we had along with some very helpful outcomes addressing the challenges of growth, training, and improving the effectiveness of the ministry.
Of course, FUN was essential! Pete shared a room with Matt and had to wait A WHILE before their room was ready. A WHILE turned into HOURS so Pete and Matt decided to check out the room to see what was taking so long. Needless to say, they laughed a lot! Click here to see pictures of their room and the retreat. The place had a hockey theme, and the room was like a sky-box in a basketball gym. Weird!

BAGS OF JOY TEAM
This is the 4th year the "Bags of Joy" have been distributed to our UCPP pre-schoolers, and the 2nd year to have a team distribute them personally. Each "Bags of Joy" consists of toothbrushes, toothpastes, soaps and toys which were collected by Eastside Foursquare Church and other local churches in Washington. Even though this is the 4th year to do this, it still feels overwhelming at times with the blessing the team receives from the kids and parents. The intent is to bless them --- but it always seems the team ends up with more than what they came with!
The team of 13 was led by Brandon & Marci Brazee, and Patty & Bryant Sabandal. The purpose of the team is to deliver the "Bags of Joy" to all 41 pre-schools and pray for each of the 1,300 kids, parents, teachers, and pastors. The team also shared some fun games, songs, and the Christmas story. To read a great write up from the teams' perspective, click here.
Start saving now! We plan on making this trip during Thanksgiving break for 2008 so we hope some of you can bring your family. For all of our non-Filipino readers, you must understand that the Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the world, covering all the "ber" months (SeptemBER, OctoBER, NovemBER and DecemBER). As soon as September hits, all malls, elevators, and waiting-on-hold-machines begin playing your favorite Christmas tunes. By October, malls are completely decked out in full blown Christmas decorations. By the end of November the Christmas parties start.
About the Family
Cassie just turned 18 months old and is amazingly very independent. She's learning a few Tagalog words from Tina. Her favorite shows are Barney, Blue's Clues, and Sesame Street. For those of you who have heard her talk, she still sounds like she's been drinking whiskey and smokin' a few packs a day. The doctor thought she was asthmatic but was not. She just has that deep husky voice. It's quite cool! Definitely a singing voice.
Carina is now over five feet tall and looking more like Tina. She is in 8th grade, sings with the Middle School Worship Team and generally leads her 8th grade girlfriends.
Cameron is a Junior and played Varsity Soccer this year. His team traveled to Taiwan for a tournament at Morrison Academy. They came in 2nd place. For the results and highlights of the team's season, click here.
Cameron also finally got his driver's license. He is now officially a Filipino driver. They say if you can drive in Manila, you can drive anywhere. Seriously though, Cameron is a very good and cautious driver. He hasn't picked up any bad habits yet from the jeepney and taxi drivers --- well, maybe picked up a few from Pete.
Cameron and Carina were both also involved with their school's outreach called A4J - All for Jesus. The A4J is a ministry club of Faith Academy to underprivileged children who live near the school mostly as informal settlers. More specifically, the A4J program is a Bible club for ages 4-12 that offers stories, games and activities that teach children about Jesus Christ. The club meets each Sunday morning from 7:00-9:00am. The club season currently goes from September through the first week of December with a possible attendance of 450 children each week.
Tina was recruited by Faith Academy to teach 7th and 8th grade girls P.E. this school year. She also subs for High School and Middle School Tagalog classes when needed. She is considered a volunteer teacher as most of the teachers are at Faith Academy. Faith Academy is a school for missionary children. All teachers raise their own support and given a discount off their childrens' tuition. That is a huge blessing for us! Carina is one of her students and makes sure she gets special treatment. NOT! Tina enjoys teaching and mentoring the girls.
